Beginner Courses

Mandarin Harbour's professional teaching methods help students to establish the Chinese grammar foundation, which will prepare you for either our intermediate or our business courses. Additionally we guarantee you can form your own conversational sentences. If you wish to obtain a recognized qualification, we can prepare you for the HSK Primary Level exam. On completion of the 3 levels of beginner course you will know 2,080 Chinese words and expressions, 320 grammar points, and will be able to recognize 600 common Chinese characters.

Complete Beginner (80 Hours): Our Signature course
Objective: Our unique signature course, involving 80 hours of tuition, will guarantee you to achieve conversational fluency. In this course we teach Chinese Phonetics, greeting words, self introduction, shopping, bargaining, taking public transportation, ordering food and drink, seeing the doctor, booking tickets & hotels, renting an apartment, communication with Ayi (home help) and driver, using the internet in China, banking etc. Upon completion of this level, students should have a command of about 1000 basic words, 240 sentence patterns, 60 grammar points and 200 characters. You will understand enough grammar to be able to form your own daily conversational sentences. Students wishing to progress can move onto to the next level course, Middle Beginner.

Middle Beginner (60 hours)
Objectives: This course will consolidate the learning from the complete beginner course, and will expend the student's grammar study to enable students to function more effectively in social and work situations. Upon completion of this level, students should have achieved a command of an additional 480 basic words, 120 grammar points and 200 characters.

Upper Beginner (60 hours)
Objectives: This course will continue the learning from the middle beginner course, and will further expend the student's grammar study to enable students to function even more effectively in social and work situations. Upon completion of this level, students should have achieved a command of an additional 600 basic words, 140 grammar points and 200 characters. Completion of the upper beginner level will allow students to progress to intermediate level.

Intermediate Courses

Any student who has completed all 3 beginner classes can progress to our Intermediate level courses. Students who already have an understanding of Chinese from beginner study at another school or university can be assessed to ensure they have sufficient knowledge to start an intermediate course. Intermediate courses are for students that have already achieved conversational fluency, and will focus on a deeper knowledge of reading, Chinese writing, and more complicated sentence structures. If you wish to obtain a further recognized qualification, we can prepare you for the HSK Intermediate Level exam. On completion of the 3 levels of intermediate course you will know 1,377 Chinese words and expressions, 86 grammar points, and will be able to recognize 916 common Chinese characters, in addition to that learned in the beginner level classes.

Lower Intermediate (60 hours)
Objectives: Students will bring together their previous learning, and combine it with new grammar points and sentence structures, to allow quick communication. Upon completion of this level, students should have a command of about 448 new basic words and expressions, 27 new grammar points, 44 new communicative function items and 316 characters.

Middle Intermediate (60 hours)
Objectives: Students will learn how to find different ways of formulating what they want to express in both writing and speaking, especially in many professional contexts. Students begin to create with the language in more complex and demanding situations. Upon completion of this level, students should have a command of about 442 new basic words and expressions, 15 new grammar points and 300 characters.

Upper Intermediate (60 hours)
Objectives: Students will learn to comfortably and confidently communicate in an effective and appropriate way, even in demanding situations. They will be able to precisely express their meaning in both writing and speaking. Upon completion of this level, students should have a command of about 487 new basic words and expressions and 300 characters.

Advanced courses

Any student who has completed all 3 Intermediate classes can progress to our Advanced level courses. Students who already have an thorough understanding of Chinese from Intermediate study at another school or University can be assessed to ensure they have sufficient knowledge to start an Advanced Level course. Advanced courses are for students who can already confidently and effectively speak, read and write in Chinese. On completion of our two Advanced level courses, students will be able to have a better understanding of newspaper and other media, will have learned basic business related words, and will understand more modern and contemporary Chinese expressions. If you wish to obtain a further recognized qualification, we can prepare you for the HSK Advanced Level exam.

Advanced 1 (40 hours)
Objectives: Students will learn modern and contemporary words and expressions in both writing and speaking.

Advanced 2 (40 Hours)
Objectives: Students will build upon the knowledge gained in Advanced 1 to have a good understanding of Chinese newspapers, magazine and media and will also improve their Chinese communication competence at work.

Advanced 3 (40 hours): Tailor made class (Optional)
